how large is the harp/throat (the area from the needle over to the RIGHT side of the machine -that part that holds the motor)?

It measures 8 3/4 inches from needle to right side of machine. It is 6 1/2 inches high from base to top of opening.

Does it come with any feet? Free motion?

Yes, there are many feet, including a walking foot. If you want a 1/4 foot with an "edge" on it, you would have to purchase one from the sewing ($15.99). I like to sew with the edged 1/4 inch foot. Otherwise, there are many presser feet, including the free motion foot. You can drop the feed dogs to free motion. This is a great quilting machine and has excellent "pin feed," which moves the fabric through like butter. First time threading took longer for me, but after that it was free sailing. If you want to make quilts faster like I do, this is a great machine. I used to quilt with my Bernina, but I like the Brother better. It is more affordable and well made. You should also know that if you use thicker threads (I always use 100% cotton from, that you will need an 80/12 needle instead of the smaller ones due to the way the machine's tension is set up. Hope this helps,Vivian from Wisconsin

what is the throat space?

Throat space is the area to the right of the needle when seated at the machine. It is the open area between the needle and the vertical side of the machine that determines how much fabric might fit comfortably within that space when sewing on your project.

I love this machine but i have alot of tension problems - the thread on bottom keeps bunching up - i'm sure its inexperience but can someone help me please ?

I just saw this . But I have sewing for over 55 years . I have 10 machines each one different purpose . . Best machine I have EVER had . I keep my tension on 3 always while piecing and sewing. I use Coats and Clark piecing thread . Top and bobbin. It's the only thread that doesn't have lint to my knowledge. If your having problems read and read again the threading directions . You'll find an answer . Rethread.

I sew a lot of upholstery and fur fabrics which clog my machine..Is this machine heavy duty enough to handle these fabrics?

I believe it is as close to an industrial machine as there is with its 1.5 amp motor. Most domestic machines have less than 1 amp motors. That being said it has limitations - I just finished sewing outdoor cushion covers, with tightly woven outdoor fabric, and it needed my hand to help turn the balance wheel where there were 8 layers (ends of ties) of the stuff. A true industrial handles that like nothing, and they are out there for sale used for sometimes $300 and usually have walking feet and needle feed. But you need lots of room and a real stand... Bernie

can pre-wound bobbins be used in this machine

We do recommend using pre wound bobbins. The machine uses the SA159 bobbins which are class 96 Type L metal bobbins.

Has anyone solved the problem of the clipper jerking your thread out so you have to re thread?

That was happening to me too, I found that it stops if you only put the thread through one of the 3 holes in the thread guide at the top of the machine (directly above the tension dial). The instructions say to put it through 2 of the holes, which creates more tension. If you only use one, it will stop pulling the thread out of the needle.

Does any sewers out there use this machine for normal sewing like dress, shirts etc, I don't quilt and want it for dressmaking

I have not used it for normal sewing but it could be used for normal, no frills sewing. It only has a straight stitch, no zigzag or other type of stitch. When I learned to sew in the 1960s that is the only stitch my mother had on her machine. I have made many many articles of clothing on straight stitch machines. Instead of finishing the edge of seams with a zigzag finishing stitch you trim the seams that tend to revel with pinking shears.

does it have a stitch that looks like a hand stitch

This does not, but I think if you adjusted the stitch length and choice of thread you may get the results you are looking for. This machine is built well, fast, and I am enjoying it .

can this be used on a quilting frame?

I haven't used my PQ1500S with a frame, so I really can't say but I can tell you it is the best sewing machine. I mainly purchased it for sewing bags and hard to sew items for my business. It also comes with several feet as well as the knee lift.
