If I'm understanding the use of the Hera Marker correctly, it marks by leaving a crease - couldn't a bone folder tip be used for the same purpose?

The hera leaves a thin light colored line. A bone folder isn't as sharp and I don't think it would leave a line.

can you make free hand designs like swirls with this or do you have to press it up tight against a ruler for it to work?

Sure, if you are creasing FABRIC......and then you can follow the swirly line. You can basically do anything you wish to design. But it is also great to use for LINE quilting and with a ruler....makes for PERFECT LINES without leaving fabric pen or pencil marks.Hope this helps you....I love mine.Merry Christmas..........Ken

Can this be used by both right-handers and left-handers?

Although I'm right-handed, I can tell that the marker will work just as well for left-handed folks. The shape is the same on each side. It's a great tool!

Can it be used to mark curved iron-work type (flowers, hearts, etc) quilting designs ?

Yes, that’s one of the things I love about this tool. It can be used to mark any free style design you can think of.

Is the Hera Marker plastic or some other material?

Yes, it's a very rigid plastic. Not flimsy at all. I definitely like it the times I've used it to mark fabric through the paper pattern

How long does it take for the item to arrive from the uk? mine was scheduled to take 3.5 months to arrive. is this normal?

I bought mine a while back but it was less than a week.

Do you use this before or after you sandwich your quilt?

After basting or pinning the sandwich together, use the marker (press hard) to indicate where your quilting stitches will go. It's not ideal, as the marks don't show very well, depending on the color of your fabric, and it's difficult to see where to stitch. Good luck.

how long is the hera marker? Product dimensions says 7.38 inches but the one I received is only 5 inches.

This question is already answered in the Q & A. Mine is also 5 inches long. Since it fits my hand just fine and I have been using it for a couple of years now, I wouldn't say the size is any problem unless you have a particularly large hand. I don't know why the dimensions given on the site are so big. Probably for the same reason the sox I bought were advertised as being 80% cotton, and when they came they were 50% cotton. Someone, somewhere is lying.

Does this work better than just a butter knife?

I can't say better as I've never used a butter knife! LOL. But, I have used a Hera for as long as I can remember and it does the job for me. It might be easier to pack than a butter knife...LOL!

If I mark a quilt top before basting will the crease stay visible until I finish quilting?

Depends on the size of the quilt and how much it'll be moved around. After awhile, I find that the crease gets less visible if I move and bend the fabric a lot. It works really well for small projects and things that you finish right away.
