does it have multiple needle positions?

Yes, according to the manual, the needle position is adjustable. (http://janome.com/siteassets/support/manuals/economy-models/inst-book-7318-english.pdf) It also shows this as an option in this promotional video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=347&v=nbx8w-tTkBM

Any opinion on whether to go with the HD1000 or Magnolia 7318? I am a light crafter/sewer, maybe use once or twice a month

Don't know anything about the HD1000 either but can highly recommend the Magnolia. It's sturdy, love the top loading bobbin and I only use it a couple of times a month as well. I mostly sew/craft/knit etc. by hand but the Magnolia satisfies everything I need to do by sewing machine.

Is it easy to thread?

If you have used a Singer or Kenmore in the past, it is the same exact threading that has been in place since at least the 60's... I was able to thread it immediately because those are the machines I grew up with at home and in home ec in the 80's! Even if you have no experience, I think you would still find it easy to thread.

Can you shorten jeans

I love my Janome Sewing machine - having always had an Elna but not being able to afford a new one, this Janome is fabulous for everything I want to sew - dressmaking, patchworking, drapes and blinds, costumes for the school play etc. It would definitely sew denim, no problem, the only problem would be if you needed to sew multiple layers of denim together, it would be too thick to pass under the needle - the place on jeans where the seams are multiple layers - you'd have to skip that part and if necessary stitch it by hand for two or three stitches. All the rest the Janome could handle. Hope this helps!

What is the drop feed feature?

The drop feed feature allows you to drop the feed dogs on the machine, so you can move your material around freely. The feed dogs come out from the needle plate to pull the fabric through for sewing.

Where do i get hard copy of manual

The manuel is included with the machine, it is in a plastic sleeve it is thin. As for a hard copy you may need to contact Janome.

Does this machine sew well on knits as well as woven fabrics?

I did not use it on knits but can't imagine why it would not work perfectly providing you have the right thread, the right needle and if a really stretchy knit, sew on a minute zig zg.

Within 2 hours of using the machine, the light bulb burnt out. Where do we replace it and what bulb brand / # do we get?

Hi You can call any authorized dealer or you can call us at 800-442-8227 and ask for our sewing specialist and ask for this bulb. Thank you Scott

will it fit into a sewing cabinet?

It isn't made to go into a cabinet. It is made to be free standing.

Can this machine be used in Nigeria? Voltage over here is 220/230/240V

I'm not certain but I think you will need a transformer to run this machine in Nigeria. We plug it into 110 volt outlets.
