can this machine sew thru heavy duty canvas or leather?
I was able to use it to repair the canvas top of my gazebo. In fact, this the primary reason I purchased it. I tried using heavy duty "canvas" rated needles, but was far more successful with smaller standard duty needles even though one of them broke. There were times I had to coax it along when there were like 3 or 4 layers, but once it was going it would just keep on sewing the entire length.
Can I use my metal bobbins in my machine or do I need to use the plastic ones?
All top load machines use plastic bobbins except for older early singers with metal bobbin case, there is a magnetic ring attached to the hook center that holds the plastic bobbin case from rattling and to slow its movement, if you use metal bobbins they become held by the magnetic transfer through the bobbin case floor (metal) and limit or restrict bobbin rotation,if you remove the magnet you can use the metal bobbins, however it will be noisey and excelarate wear on the bobbin case
does this machine have foot pedal?
Yes there is a foot control but it is the Achilles Heel of the machine. I can't control the machine well with this foot pedal as it is so light weight a wind will tip it over....thus you won't get a smooth start on this machine. You press down a hear a hum and then press again and it goes full speed until you lift your foot back off the pedal. Look for another machine, or better yet try one out at a sewing machine dealer to make sure it works smoothly. My machine is going to Goodwill.
can a beginner use this machine.. i am thinking about the speed
Yes - This is one of the easiest machines to use. You will get used to the foot pedal very fast to control the speed. I have given several of these machines away as presents. I also keep two of these machines at all times. They get used of leather work, quilting and wearable art such as jackets and shirts. A great machine !!!
Does this sew cloth diaper layers well? Combination layer of knit, fleece/Bamboo fleece, Cotton velour, elastic.
Yes knit... Yes fleece/bamboo fleece ....Yes cotton ... Yes elastic .... Velour haven't tried but yes to the rest Including denim and light leathers
Does it quilt?
The Singer model 4423 sewing machine has the capability to quilt. You would need to purchase the optional presser feet required for quilting as the Singer model 4423 sewing machine comes with only the basic presser feet: All-Purpose Foot (on machine), Zipper Foot, Buttonhole Foot, and Button Sewing Foot
I am looking for a machine that will consistently sew leather, denim and heavy canvas -- is this machine a good purchase for that?
Absolutely this sewing machine is made for that type of sewing, just make sure you have heavy duty needles. The motor is stronger than other machines. I have found it will sew through six layers of heavy denim without pausing. I have had mine for fours years and its still going like the day I bought it. The sewing bed is also made of a material so it will not get scratched up from from using heavy stiff material.
Can this machine sew nylon webbing (to secure release buckles)?
I bought the next model up from this one to sew 1 inch mil spec nylon webbing and after reading reviews that it was I thought what the heck. WRONG!! it struggled to get through it and no matter what I did I could not get the tensioning to sync up. I returned it and found a $50 singer 99 with a handcrank and I have been off to the races ever since. They only thing heavy duty on this machine is the sticker saying so.
I just bought singer 4423. It seems quite noisy. Is that normal. And I could not get needle threader to work.
I'm not sure about the noisy machine, however, I couldn't get the needle threader to work too. It seemed so cumbersome to use. I threaded it the old-fashioned way. There's a video on the Singer site which shows you how to use the threader. I still couldn't seem to do it right.
Does it have a cover or carrying case?
Yes, it has a little thin plastic cover. You may want to invest in a carrying case if you plan to move it often. The only thing I did not like about it was that it has NO needle threader built into it.
