How well does the machine handle heavier fabrics (canvas, upholstery fabric, etc.) for home decor projects?

Things I use without issues on heavy materials and leather. The heavy duty correct size needle for the item at hand. Heavy duty thread. Adjust the knob on the left side of the machine if needed, especially on leather. Normally the walking foot or presser foot "A" with the lock. Use a longer stitch. Run at a slower speed, always. I've sewn everything from silk, lace, upholstery, suede, quilting and leather to include jackets and placing patches on them as well with no issue doing the above steps. This is my 3rd Singer machine and a Singer serger on hand IF needed. I inherited my Mom's Stylist (late 60's to early 70's model) and I have a Stylist from the 1990's. This machine is just as tough as the ones I already had. Yes they've been pushed to the max. This one is getting there. My machine had to do a few projects that my best friend's Viking and Janone just refused to even do. This is a well built machine and nothing less. You just have to read the manual and learn it plus know what each stitch and feature will do or not do. Several reviews that are bad I see where they are novice to ANY machine. That's fine for easy stitching but many give bad reviews without having knowledge. My personal opinion is that this machine will more than likely be my last machine and I'm in my mid 40's. It's a workhorse and I plan to keep it tuned and we'll taken care of. Basically maintain it and I see many years of wonderful projects. The designs are great but I have an industrial embroidery machine from our family business to do better stitching. The designs here are smaller ptojects and clothing vs a heavy high thread count. Giving this machine a score of a 100 for design, features and the ability to sew heavy weight projects with no hiccups! Enjoy this machine!

I am fairly new at sewing and want to buy the best machine that will not be too complicated to use. Could this be the machine I am looking for. Reading very bad reviews. Please help

If you have the time and patience to READ and try everything out one at a time, yes you will find this a very good investment. It cuts the thread when you are finished, it will thread the machine and the LED screen tells you when the needle is unthreaded and many other features. It has many (600) built in stitches and many different styles of buttonholes. I have been sewing for 60+ years and I love it, but then many of the features are not new to me. That is why I say time to read and patience to try all the different feet and stitches. If you just want to sit down and sew, this is not the machine for you.

What features does the 9985 have that can justify paying twice the cost of a new 9960? Looks like just a better UI Display and more stitches?

Each higher model number (9960, 9980, 9985, so far) has more stitches and improves or adds in some way to the computerization. 9960 is an EXCELLENT machine. 9980 added a larger screen with an "advisor" component (troubleshooter/advisor built into the software). 9985 gave the advisor a VOICE, not just text on the screen, and of course added stitches. I went with the 9980 because the voice makes no difference to me, but I did want the advisor function. I will comment here that the MANUAL is exceptionally clear! There are some areas that Singer will always be "tops" at doing, and I would say that they are tops right now in writing the manual/introducing an "advisor," and in accessories they include. The accessories package with all of the 99xx machines is excellent, generous, useful, and worth quite a bit of money saved on extras!!

Does this machine include a seam finisher in it's features? Maybe similiar to serging?

Th 9960 has several stitces that sew a seam and overcast the edge at the same time. To complete the look of a serged seam you would need to attach the side-cutter. This attacment is not part o the standard accessories however and would need to be purchased separately.

Reviews and where can I find a manual so that I can read more about it. Is it like an embroidery machine also.

NOT an embroidery machine. I did not want an embroidery machine as I was afraid that I would not be able to pay for all the different threads that it would need, good quality thread is important, so the decorative stitches are plenty for me to use in quilting to add decorative edges. you can find the directions and the manuel here http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals/search?man_model_no=9985

What is the size of the throat for quilting?

The latest answer from yesterday by "susan0624" is right on and I just finished a queen-sized quilt (108 x 108); it wouldn't have worked to do free motion with this size and all rolled up in the throat, but I used one of the fancy stitches along the seams and it worked out great; also, I think I pushed it to the limits with doing a queen-sized quilt on it.

what size bobbins does the singer 9960 use

I spoke with Singer customer service and was told to only use the class 15. The latest video from Singer about the Quantum Stylist 9960 also tells you to use the plain 15. I double checked with customer service and was told once again (March 5, 2017) that the class 15 is the correct bobbin for the 9960. I hope this helps clear up the confusion!

what is the return policy for this item?

The return policy is 30 days from what Amazon told me....but if you buy from Amazon they also said you only get a 1 year warranty from Singer. I bought mine from a Viking Sewing Store that also sells Singer to get the 25 year warranty that Singer offers. Not sure people are aware that most sewing companies like Brother for instance don't favor their warranty unless you buy from an authorized Brother dealer. When I asked Amazon if Singer acknowledged the 25 year warranty they told me to call Singer and then said there is a 1 year Singer warranty.....so something to keep in mind when purchasing machines online!

is this machine good for quilting

Absolutely... I've made several quilts, I've even made a denim rag quilt....just make sure you keep it clean....by that I mean take off the plate where the needle is & use the lint brush to clean off built up lint...and make sure to do that soft....and this machine will work likea pro....

How hard is it to adjust the thread tension for various fabrics? Is it very finicky with lots of adjusting and testing?

I recently learned something regarding tension setting that may be of help to you. I was always unsure if I should turn the knob to a higher number or lower number to fix tension and I was told to think of it like a game of tug-a-war. Higher number means more tugging the thread. So if the upper and lower thread are not evenly kissing in the middle either lower or raise number of tuggers accordingly.
